Our Han Teacher 3 /
A lesson in our textbook teaches us about our National Day and the military parade. The soldiers in the parade are described as "valiant and heroic." We don't know what that means, but we've never seen so many soldiers together, and each of them has a gun in their hands! We get excited when seeing guns.
Jun-kai, as inquisitive as ever, asks, "what are they doing with the guns?"
Before the teacher says anything, Dan said, "they are going to shoot the pigeons. Look!" He points at the peace doves flying at the top of the picture.
"What?" the teacher looks surprised, you can see her lips going up a little like she was going to laugh.
"No, " Guang Chang said, " they are going to shoot the flying squirrels!"
"Haha..., " the teacher bursts out laughing again.
"No, not like that. You hunt them at night, with the light on your head!" says Ah-Dai.
"No no no, not so many people, the animals will know them coming and run away!" Jun says.
Everybody gets excited when talking about hunting. We start talking about our dads' huntings. The "valiant and heroic " soldiers can never compete with our dads. They can't be as brave as our dads. Our dads have hunted wild boars so big and flying squirrels so many that nobody can ever beat them.
The teacher doesn't stop our talking; she just lets us talk. She even asks how we hunt flying squirrels. Dan says, "You shoot light at them first, then they go like this..." he crosses his eyes, "you know, freeze like a rock, then our dads will shoot them down. "
We also tell our teachers how to set up traps to catch wild boars. We talk and talk. The teacher listens and listens, and gradually freezes like those flying squirrels until Dan asks if she likes to have a set of wild boar teeth as a gift. In amazement she says, "Awesome! you have known so much about hunting! You will be the best hunters when you grow up."
Although our teacher doesn't know much about anything, she thinks we are awesome. And that makes us feel "valiant and heroic", too, like those soldiers.
