My Han Teacher 7 Teacher in Love /

Teacher in Love

The janitor told our teacher that if she followed the only road of our village to its end, she would find a small waterfall. That's the place we call Water Source Site, which gives us drinking water.

The teacher asks us whether we have been there and how to get there. Kai tells her we go there to swim and catch crabs. But, we need big brothers to take us there, because it's a little steep, and we need to help each other so we won't fall. The teacher asks us to ask some big brothers to take her there after school.

Kuang and Dai find 2 big brothers from the fifth grade. After class, the teacher borrows the janitor's small scooter. She says, "the mean dogs will never catch up this scooter," and grins, looking very proud. Dai says, "Teacher, let me sit at the back, if mean dogs come, I help you kick them away!" The teacher thinks a while and says, "OK." The rest of us take our bikes. We are not afraid of mean dogs. Some girls want to come along, too. But, they have to walk. Not enough bikes, and we don't want to take girls on our bikes.

The teacher's scooter shoots out. We peddle behind like crazy mice on wheel. We are all huffing and puffing when we get there.

"Listen," the teacher stops us, "it's water." She looks so excited already. We don't understand, it's JUST water!

The big brothers lead the way, we have to get down to a winding slope to the water site.
"Teacher, grab the plants at your sides if you feel falling," says a big brother.
"Grab the vine that sticks out to help you walk," says the other brother. But the teacher grabs his shirt instead. Step by step, slowly, we reach the water.

"I saw it! I saw it! I saw the water fall!" the teacher cries out. The big brothers turn their head to look at the teacher; they snigger, and we, too. Now they know our teacher is really a first grader.

We reach the end of the slope and with a big jump, here we are, standing by a small waterfall pouring its water to our natural swimming pool. The water continues streaming down and joins the big river where we had our field trip.

The second we reach the pool, we take off the clothes and jump right in, splashing and water fighting, making lots of noises, louder then the waterfall. Our teacher is just standing there, staring at the waterfall, for a long long time. She shakes her head, gently, she whispers something, though we can't quite hear it, but I believe she says, "Amazing, too beautiful to be true."

The teacher rolls up her pants, she steps into the water and picks a big rock nearby the fall to sit. She sits there and looks up to the waterfall, like a statue. Her hair now is covered with tiny water drops. It looks like she is enchanted by the water fall. It looks like she is IN LOVE.

"Why are you staring at the waterfall?" asked Li-Chuang.
"Because it's beautiful. Don't you star at something that's beautiful?"
"Yes, but a waterfall is just a waterfall, is it beautiful?"
"Yes, absolutely. maybe because you grew up with the waterfall, it's not that beautiful to you anymore," says the teacher. "Back home, if I want to see a waterfall, I have to travel for a long time to the mountains to find it, when I find it, I have to camp beside it for a few days to enjoy it. Here, the waterfall just stays here, waiting for you to visit. And you can come as often as you want! You are lucky!"

Are we? we don't quite feel the same way. But now we know Han people are different from us. Common things to us like eating baby bees are unusual to them. This waterfall is the same.

After a good swim, comes the crab time, of course, our usual routine. The teacher was not happy about that, she says we "ruin" the scenery. We don't know what that means. How can we ruin it when you can't even touch it? She says next time she'll come here by herself so she can quietly enjoy her waterfall. Since when did the waterfall become hers? Strange!

And she means it. Next time, and many many times more, she goes by herself, with the scooter.
"What are you doing at the waterfall?" we ask, "you don't swim, and you don't barbecue crabs."
"It's a secret between me and the waterfall," she says.
"I know, " somebody says, "you go there to meet your lover." Then everybody starts oohing and ahhing.
"Right," the teacher says, our eyes get bigger with a long oooooooh.
"I go there to meet my lover, my waterfall is my lover. I have to love it because you don't. "

Well, of course we love our waterfall, it's our life, we drink it, but we are not IN love with it like our teacher. We hope the teacher loves not only the waterfall but all of us, too.

My Han Teacher 6 /

Popcorn

Our teacher tells us, to thank us for giving her barbecued crabs on the day of field trip, she will make some popcorn for us. Why popcorn? because we had no ideas what popcorn was when the teacher was trying to teach an unit in our Nature & Science class. To get popcorn, our teacher had to go to the city, which means 2 hours of bus trip. After getting the popcorn, she borrowed a big pan and a small gas stove from the janitor. We are all so excited. It feels like the teacher is going to do some magic.

We gather around the pan and stove. The teacher shows us the small bag of popcorn, "See? the grains are dry. Only the dry ones will do."
We have corns, but never eat them dry. Don't know how the dry corns become popcorns.

The teacher pours in some oil to the pan, and sends the grains sliding down the pan. She stirs them a little, then puts the lid on.

"Now, let's wait for the fireworks," she said.
Fireworks? we look at one another, what does that mean?

We wait, and wait. It's so quiet and still. Only our eyes move around, from the pot, to the teacher, to each other. The teacher's eyes are moving around, too, moving from face to face. Just when our eyes are about to fight in the air, 'POP' the first firework brings our eyes to the pan. Then, pop pop! pop! pop pop pop! It IS fireworks! The lid also goes Dong Dong Dong like a drummer. Our eyes get big, our mouths get big, big 'ah' coming out of our big mouths.

Pop pop pop, Dong dong, Ah....

pop pop pop, Dong dong, Ah...
Pop Dong, ah, pop dong...
Ah...pop....pop.....pop....pop...dong

We are making a popcorn percussion!

Not long, the pop gets quieter and lighter, then it comes to a complete silence. We look at each other, Now what?
With a 'swash,' the teacher quickly takes off the lid. What a magic! the dry grains are gone! Only the white, plump, fluffy corn flowers! and they smell like flowers, too!
The teacher snatches some salt and sprinkle it to the flowers, then without her telling us what to do, we all rush to get our lunch bowls and get into a line for the popcorns. All the popcorn is soon gone. It is so good that even the ones dropped on the ground are picked up and popped into our mouths.

I don't know how to describe the taste of it. It's like spongy cotton balls rolling in the mouth.
"Is it good?" the teacher asks.
We all nod and smile, only Dan rolls his eyes and says, "No, it's not right with salt. You should put sugar to make it better." The second he said it, we all roll our eyes and say, "Yes, yes, with sugar is better."
"No, no, salt is better, never have it with sugar," the teacher says.
"Then, you should try it with sugar, and you'll see," Dan is not giving up.
“Ok, let's make another pan and see if it's better with sugar," the teacher says.
"Yeah!" we cheer, and Dan springs from his seat and says, "I'm going home to bring some sugar." He dashes out of the classroom as soon as he said it.

The teacher doesn't know this is our trick to get more popcorn, and Dan knows the trick better than anyone else.
Now the popcorn percussion is ready to play again. Pop- pop- dong- dong- Ah....Yeah!

My Han Teacher 5: A Field Trip/

A Field Trip

We have our field trip today, and the whole school is going, that means more than 100 people! For us, it is a big thing. The place for our field trip is the creek behind the village. Sometimes we go there, but never with the whole school. So, it's quite exciting for us. When we gather in the morning, the teacher looks at us with her signature "surprise" look.

"Do you bring anything for the field trip?" she asks.
"Yes, I brought this and... this." Kwang shows her a box of matches and a pocket knife.
"Why are you bringing these?" again, the teacher is surprised. "It's dangerous, playing with fire and knives, don't you know that? You don't bring snacks for field trips like chocolate or cookies...?"

Here she comes again! she really doesn't know anything! We don't have money for those things! and the river will give us things to eat.
"Don't you worry, teacher, later the matches and the knife will do the snack tricks. You just wait and see."
The teacher frowns. We know she doesn't believe us.

When we arrive, we see the principal and the janitor. The janitor got two big food containers on his motorbike, insides are the boiled eggs we normally have (a part of the nutrition plan provided by the government). The principal gives each of us two oranges (from his own garden), one bun, and some cookies. After that, we are dismissed.

Yeah, we can't wait to take off our clothes and jump into the river for a good swim or water fight. The peaceful water is quickly churned up with splashes, laughters, and noises. The girls are shy to take off their clothes. They just sat on the big rocks and chat. Some are catching crabs.

The teachers get together for their own barbecue. With a quick grip, Teacher Tien quickly catches two frogs from under a rock, and within a few seconds, the frogs are stretched for barbecue. He did it so fast like a show that all the other teachers clap and cheer. The smell of the barbecue makes us hungry too! Some boys from the senior class start to catch fish. They use their clothes as fish nets and hold hands to form a circle. The fish are now trapped in the circle. Then they narrow the circle to catch the fish. They give us some fish. We dig up taros and give them some, too. The knifes are used to cut the food, and the matches are now helping make the fire. When we start our own barbecue, our teacher comes over to check on us.
"No wonder you don't need to bring snacks." She smiles, her eyes twinkles with admiration.
We give her the biggest crab. She says this is the field trip with the most "wild fun" she has ever had. "wild fun? what is that?" we ask.
" It's the fun you can get from the wild. But you are sort of living in the wild, you probably won't feel the fun I'm having now."

"So what did you do on a field trip?" Kai asks.
"Mostly we just fill up our backpacks with junk food and lunch. Then we finish all the food in an amusement park. After we take all the rides, roller coaster, bumper cars...then we go home."
"Wow!" everybody cries out, "so cool!"
"Really? I love to go! But we don't have any amusement park here," Dan said, and everybody sighs.
"Don't be silly!" the teacher tries to cheer us up, " Your field trip is a real one. A knife, some matches, and you have all the fun in the field...Kids in the city will never understand this fun..."
"But...we like to have your field trips, too!"
"That's true, different kinds of fun," said the teacher, her voice trails off.

The teacher looks far into the surrounding mountains, then sees us gathering around the dying fire to dry our clothes. She mumbles, "if Han kids get lost in these mountains, they won't be able to survive. But you will and I admire that. These mountains are your amusement park."

We've never thought our mountains an amusement park, but it is like the teacher said, although we still envy the kids who go to amusement parks on field trips.

Wouldn't it be nice if we can swap our trips? We'd love to go to their amusement parks and have their snack, and I believe they'd enjoy the "wild fun," just as much as our teacher did.

Our Han Teacher 4-2

Home visit 2

Luckily, the teacher has us to carry the big bag of bamboo tube rice for her so that she can walk to Kuang's house at ease. kuang's grandmother has a vegetable garden in the back yard and she is working there when we arrive. Kuang goes to call her while we are waiting in the house. When the grandmother sees the teacher, she says, "sorry to keep you waiting, teacher. " Then she gives the teacher a long look and says,"You look so young." Later, she gives the teacher a small glass of thing to drink. "Here, teacher, have a taste our millet wine."
The teacher is startled, "wine? now? no no no, it's 10 in the morning, I can't drink now, I have to work later, if I get drunk, I will be in trouble. thanks anyway."
"No, you won't get drunk," the grandmother insists, "you'll get lots of energy."
"Really, I'm not a good drinker, water will be just fine for me, thank you."
Kuang gives teacher a glass of water.
"I hope my Kuang has behaved at school, hasn't he?" asks the grandmother.
"Yes, he has, he helps me a lot."
"Good. "Then the grandmother asks, "how old are you, teacher?"
"Huh?" the teacher is startled again, "Me?...huh..20," embarrassed.
"It's great!" the grandmother claps, " I have a grandson, 19 this year, I'll ask him to marry you, then you can stay here," Her laugh was so loud. Kuang rolls his eyes.
"Thank you, but I'm not thinking about getting married, yet." the teacher turns red like a maple tree in winter.

Just then, Kuang's great uncle comes in. Two field mice in his hands. When knowing the teacher comes to visit, he immediately says, "Teacher, I just got these field mice, very fresh, you take this one home for dinner." The dead mouse dangles in front of the teacher. Her eyes turn big, and her face now again as white as the white moon. It looks like she's going to faint,
"Mouse? for dinner?"
"Teacher, this is not house mice, it's field mice. They eat only corns and greens, very clean."
"Yes, teacher, " Kuang adds, "very good, better than chicken. you should try."
The teacher shakes her head, "No, I mean...I don't know how to cook the mouse. Maybe next time when you cook it, I can come and see..."
"Ok, then. come next time..." the great uncle said.
The teacher says she has to visit the next house so she says good-bye to the grandma.
"Leaving so soon?" the grandma says, "When my grandson comes back, I'll invite you to come and have some mouse meat with us, then. " The teacher gave a stiff smile, so stiff we think it's going to crack on her face.

As we walk out of the house, we hear the teacher heaves a big sigh.  She smiles and shakes her head and asks us, " Tell me, what kind of food the next grandma would treat me?"
"I know," Guei cries out, "bees' babies."
"What? little bees?" The teacher frowns.
"No, we knock down the beehive and eat the white babies inside," Guei said.
"Cocoons!? You eat the cocoons?" Everybody nods. The teacher's eyes turn big again.
"Maybe you'll get some flying mouse, boar, or even bear!" Everybody jumps in with wild answers. The teacher's eyes get bigger and bigger. "Really!?" She asked,
"Of course not!" Kuang says, "We don't even have enough to eat! Share with you? No way!"
The teacher heaves a big sigh of relief again.

She doesn't know anything about us. Just thinking about these food makes our mouths watering. Wild animals are now hard to catch; even the ones caught are mostly sold to wild game restaurants for money, not for us to eat.

This home visit is like a food visit to our teacher . Although she still has little idea about what we do at home, at least she knows what we like to eat. Now everybody is waiting to see the look on the teacher's face when she is really invited to have the field mice feast with a potential husband.

Our Han Teacher 4-1 /

Home Visits 1

The teacher says that she will be doing some home visits to talk with our parents this week and asks us what will be the best time for her to come. We'd love our teacher to visit us but what she doesn't know is that most of our parents won't be home for her visits. That's why Juang says, " but my parents are not at home. They have to work. They come back only for the New Year." We all know that Juang is the little mother of her family; she has to take care of her toddler brother.

"Work?" the teacher asks, "go hunting? Does it take long to hunt?"
The teacher really thinks hunting is a "work"?

"No, " Dan says, "only hunt when they come home."
"They work outside, in Taipei, very very far away!" Kai said.
"What about your mothers?" the teacher asks again, "Do they work, too?"
"Yes, " Mei says, "work, too. Very very far away."
"Then, who takes care of you?" The teacher looks at us a little in disbelief.
"Grandma and grandpa," Juang says, "can you visit them instead?"
The teacher nods; she seems to understand, "Yes, I'd like to talk with your grandmas and grandpas. I just want to know how you are getting on at home."

Wednesday morning, those who will be visited by the teacher come to the school to take her to their homes. Kai is the first one. We all follow him to his home. Kai lives with her grandma. His mom ran away when he was little and his father hasn't been home for a long time, not even for the new year or festivals. His grandma is very old and very small. She is no taller than Kai but very healthy because she speaks very loud, the loudest in the village. She grows corns and millets and keeps some chickens.

When we are almost there, we see his grandma waiting for us at the doorway. She beckons us to come, and says, "I've prepared some bamboo tube rice for the teacher..." The teacher is surprised to have this traditional food. The moment she opens the bamboo tube, the mixed smell of fresh bamboo and steamed rice immediately floats to the air. The teacher tastes the rice with oh and ah. She says it's the best bamboo tube rice she has ever had, she even asks for the recipe, totally forgets about Kai.

Kai's grandma is so pleased that the teacher likes her rice. She tries to describe how to prepare the rice, but she only speaks a little Mandarin. So, here she is with a lot of gestures, some Japanese, and our tribal language. Her voice gets louder and louder until it's so loud that some of us have to cover the ears. The teacher stars at us and mouths "put down your hands" to us. Luckily, Kai's grandma doesn't see anything, she is just going on and on about her rice. She even asks the teacher to stay for lunch. The teacher says she needs to go on with her other visits and can't stay. Then, the grandma looks a little hesitant, she lowers her voice and says, "thank you for taking care of Kai. I don't know how to help him with his homework....you know...I can't read myself..well, I read a little Japanese, but ...please take care of him, you know his mother..." then, we see her wipe her tears. We notice Kai is looking down at the floor. It must be awful to see your grandma wiping tears in front of the teacher and classmates.

The teacher holds her hands and says, "Don't worry, grandma. Kai is a good kid. Everybody likes him. He doesn't have big problems in his homework. Don't worry."

Kai's grandma says thank you thank you a million times. She asks the teacher to visit again and gives her a big bag of bamboo tube rice to take home. Kai takes the bag for the teacher, I see him breathe a big sigh of relief and gives the teacher a big smile.

Our Han Teacher 3 /

Little Hunters /

A lesson in our textbook teaches us about our National Day and the military parade. The soldiers in the parade are described as "valiant and heroic." We don't know what that means, but we've never seen so many soldiers together, and each of them has a gun in their hands! We get excited when seeing guns.

Jun-kai, as inquisitive as ever, asks, "what are they doing with the guns?"
Before the teacher says anything, Dan said, "they are going to shoot the pigeons. Look!" He points at the peace doves flying at the top of the picture.
"What?" the teacher looks surprised, you can see her lips going up a little like she was going to laugh.
"No, " Guang Chang said, " they are going to shoot the flying squirrels!"
"Haha..., " the teacher bursts out laughing again.
"No, not like that. You hunt them at night, with the light on your head!" says Ah-Dai.
"No no no, not so many people, the animals will know them coming and run away!" Jun says.

Everybody gets excited when talking about hunting. We start talking about our dads' huntings. The "valiant and heroic " soldiers can never compete with our dads. They can't be as brave as our dads. Our dads have hunted wild boars so big and flying squirrels so many that nobody can ever beat them.

The teacher doesn't stop our talking; she just lets us talk. She even asks how we hunt flying squirrels. Dan says, "You shoot light at them first, then they go like this..." he crosses his eyes, "you know, freeze like a rock, then our dads will shoot them down. "

We also tell our teachers how to set up traps to catch wild boars. We talk and talk. The teacher listens and listens, and gradually freezes like those flying squirrels until Dan asks if she likes to have a set of wild boar teeth as a gift. In amazement she says, "Awesome! you have known so much about hunting! You will be the best hunters when you grow up."

Although our teacher doesn't know much about anything, she thinks we are awesome. And that makes us feel "valiant and heroic", too, like those soldiers.

Our Han Teacher 2/

The Secret of Being Shoeless

Our Han teacher doesn't understand why we don't like to wear shoes. She reminds us to wear shoes every day. She even gives us extra credits if we wear shoes to school. But, most of us just don't like wearing shoes. Why?

"It's too much trouble," A-Dai tells the teacher, "like doing things with gloves. When we wear shoes, our toes can't feel the ground. It's hard to walk like that."
"And....," Shieh adds, " it's easier to do math problems without shoes." He hates math.
"Why is that? " the teacher gets more confused.
Holding up his hands, he explains, "like 6 + 8, you will run out of fingers, then, you can count your toes."
The teacher bursts out laughing, "really?"
Everybody nods. She doesn't know that when she called people to the front to do math problems on the blackboard, the ones who looked down to their feet were actually counting their toes.

The teacher laughs again, then she asks, "What if you run out of your toes, too?"
"Then, you can count other people's toes," Shieh knows this trick more than anybody else.
The teacher laughs again. Really, she doesn't know anything.

One day, she is surprised that everybody is wearing shoes. She is so happy that she decides to give everyone some extra credits.
"Finally, you all wear shoes, isn't that something?" she said. I guess this is not a question. But she is still curious enough to ask us, "why did everybody remember to wear shoes today?"
Shieh immediately holds up his hand, and says, "because it's very cold today."
The teacher looks surprised again, she pauses a second, then she bursts out the biggest laugh ever! So loud and sudden, like a wild boar bolting out of woods.

Now we know that every time our Han teacher understands something, she bursts out laughing like a wild boar. We like it, and we like our teacher. She seems to know us more and more every day.
